Karyl ‘Sonic’ Edwards has been performing on bass guitar around Queensland for 15 years and adding double bass to his skill set 2 years ago. Karyl has played and been actively involved in various musical styles including Rock, Progressive Rock/Metal, Blues, Country, Funk, Soul, Jazz, R’n’B and Popular music. Karyl graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Music (Jazz Performance – Bass) from Jazzworx! in 2003 and the Vocational Graduate Diploma in Multi-Instrumental Pedagogy in 2006. He also has taught at Jazzworx from 2003. As Head of Jazz Bass Studies, he has authored a book on Bass Scale Fingerings published by Jazzworx!, in addition to contributing to others for the Jazzworx! Absolute Music System Certificate I – IV. During his time at Jazzworx, Karyl also contributed to the syllabus for the Vocational Graduate Diploma in Multi Instrumental Pedagogy.
Karyl has performed in venues such as Woodstock Australia, Mud Bulls & Music, Optus Gympie Music Muster, Jayco Tamworth Country Music Festival, The Tivoli, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Brisbane Convention Centre and Brisbane Town Hall and has supported artists as diverse as Amy Meredith, Kasey Chambers and Joe Satriani. Sonic is currently performing as a regular member of many duos and bands including New Directions duo, Acoustic Bliss, Dejan Toracki’s Shred Factor, The Conundrums (2011 winners of the Coca-Cola Battle of the Bands and part of the judging panel for the 2012 competition) and his own Jazz group Swingtown. He also continues to lend his skills to various recordings as a session musician and producer, including co-producing Lance
Coassin’s EP, Early Mornings (2011).
